Wedding and gala season is just starting to heat up, prompting the ever-present question, “What am I going to wear?!” When it comes to formal occasions, I’m usually a dress gal. I’m always on the hunt for plus size dresses that are versatile and make a statement like this red and black plus size party dress from Sydney’s Closet. Remember the gorgeous rose gold sequin dress a few weeks ago? (See the post here!) That was also from Sydney’s Closet.

If you have some special occasions on your calendar this spring, you’ll need a couple of versatile dresses that will go the distance. This Gabriella Party Dress from Sydney’s Closet is in a classic black and red color scheme that will work in a variety of venues. The black top is a mock crop-top and is set off at the waist by a band of sequins. But the true party part of this dress is the bottom half — a spectacular pattern of bold red florals set against a black organza background.

This dress is comfortable, modest and was made for twirling! Because it’s such a classic silhouette, I opted for non-traditional accessories. Instead of black pumps/heels, I wore these fierce black sequin high heeled booties. And since I live in Chicago, and the weather will be cold all the way through May, I went even bolder and added a black and white faux fur coat.

Pattern mix-master! I’m not sure what made me throw this black and white faux fur coat over this dress, but when I did, it just worked! The coat and the booties add an unexpected modernity to this dress that I love.
