What to Wear This Thanksgiving

Holidays are the best excuses to dress up! I take every opportunity I can find to throw on a sparkly top or brightly colored dress! However, when I’m deciding what to wear this Thanksgiving, there are a few rules I try to live by – and Gwynnie Bee makes it so easy to find the perfect outfit!

1. Wear something stretchy but structured, and add a touch of sparkle!

This Melissa McCarthy Seven7 Diagonal Plaid Pencil Skirt from my Gwynnie Bee Closet is structured, but not too tight. It is a great plaid and a perfect midi length. And even though it is a close-fitting pencil skirt, the fabric has a lot of stretch. So I won’t feel too constricted after my second helping of sweet potatoes!

For some extra sparkle, I paired this skirt with a cozy green sweater with rhinestone accents at the cold shoulders.

2. Wear longer hemlines or tights, and switch the high heels for not-so-basic flats.

Y’all know I love my dresses and high heels, but I make some modifications for Thanksgiving dinner at my boyfriend’s house. First of all, getting up and out of the sofa can be precarious when I’m wearing a shorter dress. So I add some coverage by wearing tights or leggings. This prevents wardrobe mishaps and I’m not so self-conscious.

The saturated pink of this Eliza J Bell Sleeve Fit and Flare dress from my Gwynnie Bee closet is festive, and the fit-and-flare silhouette fits my first rule too. It is structured, but roomy! Who doesn’t love a good bell sleeve?!

Also, high heels are so hard to wear around the house – especially if it has carpet! Instead, I trade my heels in for some embellished flats.

3. Opt for streamlined, non-fussy silhouettes and be sure to have a statement piece.

I try not to wear anything too fussy to Thanksgiving, since there’s a lot of sitting and talking involved. I go for streamlined looks and I add a statement piece like this Plenty by Tracy Reese Easy Blazer in Burgundy.

It is dramatic and gorgeous! I paired it with a black turtle neck and subtle burgundy and black plaid pants. The blazer really pulls this easy outfit together and elevates it!

My Favorite Thanksgiving Tradition

My family is all down south, so getting home for both Christmas and Thanksgiving is a little tough. For the last 10 years or so, I’ve stayed in Chicago for Thanksgiving. I have some of the best friends here and they always welcomed me into their homes to celebrate with their family. More recently however, I’ve spent my Thanksgivings with my boyfriend’s amazing family. What’s funny is that my favorite Thanksgiving tradition is the SAME no matter where I spend the day.

The best part of the day (besides the food, of course!) happens after the meal is finished. We clear the dishes and one-by-one find our way back at the table. Sitting around the table, we swap funny stories and poignant memories. Hours pass and we are there together – just talking. It’s not often that that happens these days, and that time is precious to me.

Inevitably, the talk turns to politics…and then someone quickly suggests dessert! Even if things got a little heated in debate, we come back together over bourbon brownies and pumpkin or pecan pie.

What’s your favorite holiday traditions??
