The Curvy Copycat: Rockin’ out with this Diesel Ad

If you’re like me, you’d love to see more plus-size bodies in ad campaigns…but that’s probably not gonna happen any time soon…so…what’s a curvy fashionista to do? Let’s create our own!

Drumroll please…say hello to my new blog series: the “Curvy Copycat!” In this series, I will attempt to recreate fashion magazine ads with plus-size clothes and plus-size bodies. 🙂

Now…the first post in the series is a huge departure from my normal style. When I saw this Diesel ad campaign, I thought it looked cool and tough and a little bizarre. But since I’m up for a challenge, I took it on. So, here’s the original ad:

Of course, I can’t recreate this exactly, but I tried to capture the flavor of the ad–all rocker tomboy-ish. How’d I do??

Skinny jeans: Forever 21 / Black blazer: Lane Bryant / White shirt: Dressbarn / Shoes via Nordstrom Rack

Ha…I told you it’d be different right???? This was so far off the path for me, that I really just wanted to see if I could do it. I felt like a greaser tomboy from the 50s. 🙂
If you spot an ad you want me to recreate in a Curvy Copycat post, tweet me @stylepluscurves!!!

If Sports Illustrated had a Plus-size Swimsuit Edition…

…this Kiyonna Kelly Swimsuit would definitely make a splash! How fantastic is this? It’s got a totally retro vibe thing going on with the ruching, awesome sweetheart neckline, and cute flippy ruffle! And isn’t this ruby color to DIE for???? I was a little nervous about doing a swimsuit shoot, but my friend Perry from Alluring Chicago took these awesome photos and helped me strike some poses. She’s absolutely wonderful, and I had such a blast pretending to be a plussize swimsuit model for a day. 🙂

 Just lookin’ for trouble! 😉
These adorable shoes are from violette shoe salon. 🙂

 I absolutely <3 Kiyonna!!

Ending the shoot with a splash!!!
Hahaha. Can you tell I had fun?? Thanks to Kiyonna for this amazing swimsuit that made me feel like an old-world screen goddess…and thanks so much to Perry for taking such cute pics. 🙂
If you’re looking for me…I’ll be at the beach!

OOTD: It’s a Bright, Sunshiny Day Dress from Igigi

A few weeks ago, I attended an Igigi shopping party at vive la femme, hosted by the Plus Fashion Week Chicago folks….and I nearly swooned in delight when I spotted this awesome retro Kayden dress from Igigi in Lemoncello! The sunny yellow top is so cheery and fun with interesting pleated details, while the brown/beige linen A-line skirt flatters and skims the curves. The brown obi belt comes with the dress and helps further define the waistline. I debuted the dress on a bright, sunshiny day and took these pics on my lunchbreak with my friend Wendy.

I chose to polish this look with bright jade earrings, a really cool funky yellow and turquoise statement ring, wooden bangles, and nude pumps.

I kept trying to get my friend Wendy to get the whole Sears Tower (or Willis Tower now) in the pic while she was laying on the sidewalk. We couldn’t stop laughing.

It was back to work after this, but I brought some of the sunshine indoors with me. 🙂

AHHH this dress comes in white and blue with a red belt too! ADORBS!

PLAY: A Fashion Show Fundraiser and Rooftop Party

When I wandered down to the MDA City Apartments in June for the PLAY Fashion Show, I really had no idea what I was in for. I had no idea that this fundraiser and rooftop party had 3 different purposes. One was to celebrate vintage fashion and accessories from designers and shops such as: Outside the Box Vintage, Rehabd Vintage, Venus Meets Vintage, Gabrielle Zwick, True Blessyn, LeThrift, Adela Red and Jae. The second purpose was to show support for equality and gay rights. The third was to raise funds to support the Sankofa Theater Company.

Well, it did all three with style! I met up with my friend Perry and had fun browsing some of the vendors set up in the beautiful space.

 Nice view from the rooftop!
Quirky vendors sold their wares throughout the space.

I always wondered what happened to all of those Barbie shoes!!!!
Some nice mixed metal pieces.

The crowd was eclectic and ready for fun.

Love these girls’ outfits!

Here I am in a SWAK goddess dress I scored at vive la femme. 🙂

Cute pic of us on the rooftop!

I couldn’t keep the different designers straight as they wound their way through the room, but here are some snaps of my favorite outfits….

It’s hard for me to pick a favorite look! Which one do you like the best???
