Plus Fashion Week Chicago: Let’s Talk About Fashion Event

As I might have hinted in my previous posts…I’ve been absolutely swamped lately…a new job and new apartment have been absorbing my time and energy for the past few months…but now, I’m finally getting the chance to catch my breath–and catch up on posts. 🙂

This event took place in May and was sponsored by Plus Fashion Week Chicago. It was billed as a time for the plus size fashion community to come together and talk about issues in the world of plus size fashion. A lovely crowd of both men and women gathered in the plush back room of the bar in the Public Hotel and watched as several gorgeous women modeled selected fashions from local plus size designers and boutiques here in the city. These pictures are not the best quality, but they should give you an idea of the event!
Terrible pic…but GORGEOUS peacock blue sateen coat with purple accents by Chocolate Sushi Couture
And the best part??? LEOPARD print lining!!! *Swoon!

This is another amazing dress from Chocolate Sushi Couture. What’s not to love about this one-shouldered peacock print dress?

And it wouldn’t be an event without the unmatched beauty of my girl Perry (Alluring Chicago). She’s wearing a SWAK dress from vive la femme boutique

Where in the world are the most beautiful curvy women???

Doesn’t she just look like a songstress from the 40s? Gorgeous!

Here’s Perry with Stephanie, owner extraordinaire of vive la femme boutique and violette shoe salon. 🙂

I always love running into Lindsey Adams (Lindsey M Adams). She’s always dressed impeccably and uses lots of color! 🙂

Perry and Jessica Milagro….Goddesses.

Stephanie looks completely at home behind the microphone!

Just giving a shout out to my home state…Alabama!!!

I came to the event straight from work, so my outfit is a little more subdued than usual. 🙂 I’m wearing this awesome striped blazer from Forever 21, reddish-orange draped top and black belt from Lane Bryant, and a black pencil skirt from Kiyonna.
I saw a lot of new faces at this event and enjoyed chit chatting with everyone in such a beautiful environment. The mini fashion show also added a great element to the evening. 🙂
Ok, more posts to come…so stay tuned, my lovelies!

Chic Swaps: Dress Disco (Really late post!)

Umm…I have NO idea how this happened, but I somehow FORGOT to post these fantastic pictures from our Chic Swaps Dress Swap that we held at violette in May. It was a seriously fun event…and every single woman left with 3-5 dresses that looked fantastic on them! The energy in the room was so positive and enthusiastic, that it was impossible not to smile! I looked around the room at one point and couldn’t believe how happy and gorgeous everyone was! I can’t wait for the next Chic Swaps event…It’s going to be in August…and it’s going to be focused on skirts and separates. But for now, look at how much fun we had at the Dress Swap!

Getting ready for the event! Purple balloons add a festive flair!

So many gorgeous dresses!!! I can’t choose!

Lorien looked fantastic in everything she tried on!

Liz looks so fun and girly in pink and polka dots!

 Angela scored my favorite dress!

Kelly won a fantastic dress from Kiyonna!!!

Perry was a fantastic hostess!

Stephanie, the owner of vive la femme and violette, and Kelly strike a pose!!

Angela raises a glass!!

Taking a break from trying on dresses for some treats and eats. 🙂

Jaye looks fantastic!

The end to every great event? Hugs and cupcakes!
And a plan for doing it all again!!! 🙂

Beat the “Swoobs” with this Amoena Mia Priscilla Bra

Swoobs = sweaty boobs. This is the summer curse of every big girl with big girls. I’m not great with the heat and when the temperature starts climbing, all I want to do is camp out in front of the AC in my bra. So, when I heard about the Amoena Mia Pricilla Bra from Fullbeauty.com,  I jumped at the chance to review it! Why?? Well, the Amoena bra is supposed to be “temperature equalizing” and has some special fabric inserts that wick away the moisture that accumulates in those high-friction areas under the arms, boobs, and back. There’s no underwire and the straps are a little wider and cushier than usual.

So instead of an underwire, there’s a wide band that sits under the bust and offers support.

It comes in a pretty purple-y plum color and lace fabric in the cups.

What’s the perfect way to test out a “temperature equalizing” bra?

Well, I decided to wear it while I moved to a new apartment. This was one of the hardest moves I’ve ever had (from a 3rd floor walk up to a 1st floor) and I’m pretty sure that I nearly died a few times. But…the Amoena Mia Priscilla bra performed extremely well! It provided plenty of support for the day’s high impact activities, and I didn’t feel like I was restricted or shapeless.

Throughout the grueling moving process, I kept checking in with my boob temperature…lol. And for most of the day, I was pleasantly dry and “swoob-less.” Understandably, by the end of the day, there wasn’t an inch of me that wasn’t covered in sweat and grime…but I have to say that the Amoena bra passed the test with flying colors! So if you are in the market for a high-tech, cooling bra, definitely check this one out at fullbeauty.com. There are also tons of other plus size bra options and styles…so have fun!

Hahahaha. This is a picture of me during my move (wearing the Amoena bra, of course!). Roll Tide, y’all!

Cadillacs and Curves: A silly photo shoot at the Grossinger City Autoplex

A month or so ago, Perry of Alluring Chicago and I attended the Thyck Troupe’s performance, The Abstract of Thyck at the Grossinger City Autoplex. Since neither of us are shy around cameras…we staged an impromptu photo shoot in the Cadillac showroom. Here’s the highlights of our silliness. Enjoy!!! lol

Hahhaahaa. As you can see, we ran a little wild. lol. Have I told you about the amazing dress I’m wearing?? It’s this awesome orange and black peplum dress with lace detail…and I got it from Forever 21…Can you believe it??? I LOVE love love this dress. The bow belt is also from Forever 21, but it didn’t come with the dress. Have I convinced you yet of the awesomeness of peplums???

OK…that’s all for now. Sorry I’ve neglected my blog for a few weeks…I’ll post an update soon and tell/show you what I’ve been up to lately. 🙂

Celebrating Plus-Size Talent: The Abstract of ThYck

I must admit…I didn’t know what to expect when I made my way to the Abstract of Thyck, the ThYck Troupe Chicago’s benefit performance. My night started off ALL wrong when I ruined my mani in the taxi on the way to the event…

But, when I actually stepped into Grossinger Auto Plex, I knew I was in for a fun spectacle! I met my friend Perry of Alluring Chicago, and we grabbed a drink in the VIP room before browsing through some of the vendors and playing around in front of the cameras. lol (I’ll post pictures of our fun photoshoot soon!)

Every seat was filled and crowd was ready for some action!

The show was a mix of fashion, music, dance and performances, and it was divided into 3 separate sections. I was only able to attend the first section, but it was definitely entertaining. 🙂 Here are some of the unique fashions on display during the show…some were classic shapes…and others pushed the envelope a bit.

It was definitely a celebratory event and the performers and models were great! I respect what Tressa Thomas has built with the ThYck Troupe and look forward to their events in the future!
