One of my favorite books of all-time is A Wrinkle in Time, and Walt Disney Motion Pictures is bringing it to the big screen this month!  The book tells a fantastic story about a young woman learning to trust her own intelligence, find her inner strength – and she ultimately saves the world. The trailers for the movie look amazing and the costumes are out of this world! When Disney asked if I could help spread the word about the film, it was an easy yes! Even though I haven’t seen the film yet (it opens on March 9th), I love the over-the-top costumes and the new multicultural and feminist interpretation of the story. To celebrate the launch of the movie, I decided to create a completely extra look inspired by the film’s version of Mrs. Which, played by OPRAH (the queen herself).

 It’s OK to be Extra – Inspired by A Wrinkle in Time

A Wrinkle in Time celebrates individuality – as opposed to conformity – and spreads the message that our uniqueness is our super power. Ava DuVernay’s adaptation of the story is distinctly multicultural and powerful. The film features multiple strong female leads, each unique and strong in their own ways. There are three celestial guides that guide Meg Murray (the main character played by Storm Reid) throughout the film, teaching her to embrace her own individuality.

Since I am a passionate supporter of female empowerment and one of my favorite ways to express myself is through fashion, I decided to put my own unique spin on an outfit inspired by Mrs. Which’s character.

My inspiration:

Mrs. Which’s outfits are so extra! They all include strong silhouettes with touches of armor. I get a warrior-vibe from her looks. My modern-day interpretation:

I loved the strong shoulders and armor-like touches in Oprah’s costumes. This silver-gray sweater dress reminded me of chainmail and I knew it would look fierce layered over long pants. For an extra-extra, I added a feather capelet.

Mrs. Which’s looks are topped off with saturated, glittery eyeshadow and jewels. Of course, I had to recreate it! Elizabeth Arden’s eyeshadow palettes had the perfect shades for building this blue and silver eye makeup design. Want one of these palettes for yourself? A Wrinkle in Time Synopsis

Meg Murry is a typical middle school student who just wants to fit in. She is very intelligent and gifted and loves physics – and both of her parents are well-known physicists. One day, Meg’s father mysteriously disappears without a trace, and Meg, her brother Charles Wallace and her mother are devasted. Three celestial beings (Mrs. Which, Mrs. Whatsit and Mrs. Who) come to Earth to help them search for their father and explain the secret of traveling through time and space using “wrinkles.” Using these wrinkles is known as tessering. Meg, her brother, and her friend set out on an epic quest and travel through multiple worlds to confront a powerful evil force, find her father and save the world.
