Surfing???? ME????? Really? Yep, I did it. I hauled this bountiful body up onto a surfboard and spent a few hours riding the waves off Waikiki beach in Hawaii this summer. Well…if by “riding” you mean “getting knocked off of the surfboard repeatedly” by waves, then yeah, I totally caught some waves. But you know what? I TOTALLY ROCKED IT and thanks to Juno Active, I looked fierce doing it!
When you’re a big girl contemplating an intense water sport like surfing, you need two things: Support and Coverage. I found both of these things in the Juno Active AquaSport Crossback Tank Swimsuit and the AquaSport Mock Neck Rashguard.
The swimsuit has a high neck and fit tightly so that my chest was supported and not all over the place when I was paddling and trying to pop up on the board. The rashguard is essential to protect you from the sun and the horrible rash that can develop when rubbing your skin over the surfboard when you’re paddling into the water. And of course, I chose both in the Safari print because I wanted to look and feel fierce out there in the water!
I had an absolute blast even though I couldn’t manage to stand up all the way on the surfboard. I’m pretty sure I invented a new sport called “Surf Yoga,” since I managed to do some impressive Downward Facing Dogs while out there. I spent most of the time screaming my head off while heading directly for other surfers. But I loved every minute of it!!
If you are considering trying surfing, here are a few Plus Size Surfer Girl Essentials!
Just spotted a Buy One Get One Free sale on dresses, skirts and jumpsuits at Eloquii.com with the code HAPPY. SO many cute looks.
Here are some I’m putting in my cart!
Studio Pearl Shoulder Peplum Dress
How did I miss this? I thought Melissa McCarthy’s new line, Seven7 was only being sold on HSN.com. But I just found out that it’s already available on the Nordstrom website…and will debut in the Nordstrom on Michigan Ave in downtown Chicago tomorrow!
My Nordstrom Card is burning a hole through my wallet right now. Love the lookbook pictures. Melissa looks so happy and beautiful!
Here are a few things on my pick list…
Ponte Pencil Skirt in Black/White Plaid (it comes in leopard prints too!)
I go totally nuts for a great silhouette, and I’m always on the lookout for something different than an empire waist, a-line, or sheath dress. During Nordstrom’s Anniversary Sale, I found this amazing Belted Cap Sleeve Teal Dress from Sejour. What a great color, right? A creamy blue teal is so dreamy and the shape…the shape! It’s a cross between a cocoon dress and a butterfly dress, and it’s all about the drapey folds and tie belt in the front, while the back falls in a straight line to the knee.
To really set off the dress, I knew I had to have a killer statement necklace. So my friends at Happiness Boutique (an online jewelry and clothing boutique out of Europe) were kind enough to send me this fabulous piece. It’s a gold collar necklace with metal dangling bits and an old-world, vintage feel. It’s already sold out on their site, but check out the other amazing statement necklaces that Happiness Boutique carries here.
I finished this unique look off with some gold chain platform wedges that I found at Nordstrom Rack a while ago…
I felt confident and stylish all day in this outfit. The Sejour belted dress runs large, so order a size down…and if you’re scoping it out in stores, just try it. It has little hanger appeal, but looks totally different once your curves are filling it out!
What are the new shapes that you’re seeing out in the shops or on the streets? Anything you’ve been dying to try? Tell me in the comments!
First, pick dresses or tops strong colors that flatter your skin tone and show your shape, but can still be considered modest. Next, find a great bag in an unexpected color that is large enough to fit an extra pair of shoes for your commute, all of your daily essentials and your electronics. The 3rd essential part of a #GirlBoss outfit is of course…shoes! Choose shoes that make a statement–such as a unique animal print–but opt out of the sky-high strappy heels. Try to find shoes that you won’t be limping in by the end of the day. I’m the first to admit that I don’t always follow my own advice to “wear shoes that are comfortable to walk in,” but I’m trying!
This Tahari by ASL Dress is an absolute dream! I got it on sale at Macy’s but sadly, it’s no longer available. But I did spot a few left on 6pm.com, so check here to see if they have your size!
It’s such an amazing rich cobalt blue color, in a shape that is ridiculously flattering. The hem is just above the knee for me (I’m 5’9), and the 3/4 length sleeves are perfect for an all-season dress like this. Gold details at the neckline and the cap of the tie belt add some extra pizzazz that is perfectly set off by gold accessories.
