The Hairdresser: A chubby girl power movie

Have you seen this adorable movie yet??? I am obsessed with The Hairdresser (Die Friseuse). It’s German, it’s funny, it’s sweet, and–shockingly enough–it has a fat chick as the main character.

Kathi has just moved back to Berlin and is starting over with her still-not-ok-with-it daughter. She has a very colorful personality and fashion sense, and despite her unfortunate, but quirky obsession with fruit accessories, she pulls it off. She’s turned down on her first interview at a salon because she’s too fat. But the film is not really about her being fat…she just is, and it’s just another dimension of her character. That’s one of the things I love about the movie.

The amazing director, Doris Doerrie, is not afraid to show a fat body,
which is so refreshing. We see Kathi dancing, getting dressed in the
morning, taking a shower–even having sex…with all her flesh on
display.

It’s a comedy, so there are some jokes that center on her weight and bigness, but it’s handled in a way that was unapologetic and inoffensive and funny…well to me, anyway.

She’s sweet and positive…and ultimately triumphant. Seriously. If you need some chubby girl power in your life…or just like good movies, put this in your Netflix queue immediately. LOVE.

And…there’s even a chubby girl dancing hairdresser revue at the end to really drive home the big girl power atmosphere of the movie. WATCH IT NOW.
