Plus Size Cold Weather Outfit
Next post
Well, it’s that time of year again – it’s FREEZING outside! Since moving to Chicago many moons ago, I’ve had to learn how to layer up when it gets cold. But I don’t want to sacrifice looking good just to stay warm. So here is my formula for how to get dressed if it’s freezing cold outside, but you still want to look cute!
Tights are your best friend. You want to start by getting a layer right up close to your body. And I say the higher they come up, the better. I love the plus size options from Lane Bryant and Torrid for tights.

For a first layer on top, I like to go with a slim fitting tank top. Again, something that will come nice and close to your body to keep that warmth locked in.
Most people don’t think of this layer – I always wear a slip! It acts like an extra wind barrier without getting too bulky.
For your top, you’re going to want a sweater. And this should go without saying, but I’ll say it anyway: it needs to have sleeves! I went with this simple V-Neck sweater, and I added a blow clip on the front for some extra style. Because you know me, I don’t like to be boring.

Hot take: I think skirts are the best for layering and keeping warm. Some people prefer pants, but I like a skirt with a nice thick material. This is NOT the time for satin skirts, you want wind barriers! These plaid skirts do the trick – they’re a thicker material and they’re super cute. Perfect for the holiday season and the freezing temps!

I know you’re ready for your boots, but before you put them on, you’re going to want some socks! You want socks that are a nice thick, warm material, preferably wool. And you want to make sure they come up over your ankles. The higher up, the better – your boots will cover them anyway. Trust me when I say that some warm socks with this outfit will save your life.
As for the boots, you want something that’s knee high, or even over the knee. I’d opt for a lug sole and a weather resistant material, those can still look cute I promise. I linked a great pair here.

I usually wear a down vest as another top layer. This gives me extra insulated warmth, but without the bulkiness of other fabrics. Having the extra layer where it counts but not on the sleeves makes it much easier to fit into a cute coat!

And it’s finally time for outerwear! Make your decision based on how cute you want to look and how cold it is. The key to warm coats is that it covers your butt! I also recommend a coat that fits on the tighter side, otherwise wind will flow up the bottom and it defeats the whole purpose. There are some really cute warm jackets out there, I love this black teddy bear faux fur coat.

Here’s where it gets really easy to stay warm and be stylish! You can have as much fun with your scarf, hat, and gloves as you want. And pro tip for the cold weather: these 3 items should be on you at ALL times. This is the style I went with, it’s simple and classic.
