The Curvy Copycat: Rockin’ out with this Diesel Ad

If you’re like me, you’d love to see more plus-size bodies in ad campaigns…but that’s probably not gonna happen any time soon…so…what’s a curvy fashionista to do? Let’s create our own!

Drumroll please…say hello to my new blog series: the “Curvy Copycat!” In this series, I will attempt to recreate fashion magazine ads with plus-size clothes and plus-size bodies. 🙂

Now…the first post in the series is a huge departure from my normal style. When I saw this Diesel ad campaign, I thought it looked cool and tough and a little bizarre. But since I’m up for a challenge, I took it on. So, here’s the original ad:

Of course, I can’t recreate this exactly, but I tried to capture the flavor of the ad–all rocker tomboy-ish. How’d I do??

Skinny jeans: Forever 21 / Black blazer: Lane Bryant / White shirt: Dressbarn / Shoes via Nordstrom Rack

Ha…I told you it’d be different right???? This was so far off the path for me, that I really just wanted to see if I could do it. I felt like a greaser tomboy from the 50s. 🙂
If you spot an ad you want me to recreate in a Curvy Copycat post, tweet me @stylepluscurves!!!

Outfit of the Day: Leopard and Leather

Last Friday, I woke up feeling like I’d been drinking whiskey, shootin’ pool and singing all night in a smoky bar. Not that I had been…no, really. lol. So anyway, I decided to dress to my mood. I put on some Joan Jett and went for some leopard print and leather. 🙂

This black and white leopard print top from Forever 21 is the perfect cut…it’s not really a “crop top” like it’s advertised, but it is boxy with enough structure to lay nicely over my various curves. It’s not too low in the front, so those of you who like more modest styles should love this cut. 🙂 I paired it with some black bootcut jeans from Forever 21, a faux-leather jacket, some studded kitten heels, and some dark metal accessories. My hair-as you can see-is wild and crazy–as if I just finished playing a mad set at The Empty Bottle. lol.

What do you wear when you’re feeling tough?? Do tell!

Shirt, Jeans and Bracelet: Forever 21+
Faux-leather Jacket: Giacca (by way of Filene’s Basement)
Studded Kitten Heels: Kathy Van Zeeland (by way of TJ Maxx)
Purse: Coach (don’t you love the bright yellow??)

Dressing Room Diaries, Forever21+

So, I decided to take the camera into the dressing room with me to show you the good, the bad, and the ugly of the latest fashions at Forever21. I was on my lunch break when I took these pics, so I didn’t have a ton of time…but here you go. I’ll try to explain why I decided for or against each item. Maybe you’ll find some inspiration for your own outfits. Or maybe you’ll just laugh at some of the terrible pictures I take…

As soon as I put this leopard print top on, I knew I was going to buy it! The cut was perfect for my apple  shape, skimming nicely across my midsection. It has an exposed zipper in the back too, which is a nice detail. I tried it on with these black flare leg jeans and a fun, versatile outfit was born!
UGH. That’s the best thing I can say about this leopard print sweater. It was too long for my shape, and even though I tried it on in a 3X (which is all they had), it still accentuated my belly roll in the worst possible way. I even tried tucking it into a pencil skirt to try to save it…but no. If you have a flat torso and don’t have a roll, then maybe this will be more flattering…but on me, it was awful. I couldn’t get out of it fast enough. lol
This was actually a super cute polka dot dress. Simple lines…and polka dots are totally in for fall. I can see this with black tights and a cardigan for the cooler months. This picture isn’t really that bad…but there was just something of the wow-factor missing for me, so I ended up passing on it.
This one shoulder purple dress was a little out of my comfort zone. I generally don’t like exposing my arms, but this wasn’t too horrible. What I didn’t like though was that the position of the belt, coupled with the sheer, light fabric did not lay correctly over my midsection. It kind of puckered out in an unflattering manner. Another pass.
The picture of this sheer polka dot shirt makes it look way better than it did in real life. It actually made me look a little clownish, although for some strange reason it’s slimming in this pic. If you can find it in your local Forever 21, try it on and see what you think. It’s definitely worth a look.
This black utility jacket was cute, but I wasn’t sure I’d get a lot of use for it here in Chicago. It  is a little too light for our fall, and would be too bulky under a larger coat. The polka dot gray skirt was cute, but I wasn’t confident that I would find the right outfit for it.

What have you tried on lately?? Which one of these will you be looking for at Forever 21?

Vegas Style – Curvy Edition, Night #2

For my second night out in Vegas, we went to the Cosmopolitan. It was gorg-eous! My favorite spot was the Chandelier Bar…I would give anything to have beautiful ropes of crystal hanging around my apartment! *sigh

I wanted to go a little glam…so I wore a beige-y/gold and black graphic print dress with keyhole sleeves and a belt…and styled it with a black cuff, huge black hoops, a side ponytail and red lips! I felt fun, stylish and sexy in this dress and I can’t wait to wear it again!

Love the Chandelier Bar!!!!

What’s your Vegas style?
Dress: Dots (if you can believe it!)
Accessories: Forever 21
Shoes: Me Too
Lipstick: Mac’s Ruby Woo (of course)

Here’s the video I promised showing the final walk of all the looks from Akira’s Plus Size Fashion Show. It’s a bit loud with all the cheering, but it’ll give you a quick look at the clothes.

Also, if you’re wondering what I wore, here’s a few not-so-great pictures:

I came straight from work, so I’m more conservative than usual.
