40s on a Friday Night

The Forties are one of my all-time favorite eras…the clothes are feminine and flattering (especially to plus-size, curvy women!), the hairstyles are gorgeous, and who doesn’t love red lipstick?

I rocked the 40s theme last night when I went to see a Babes with Blades theater production called The Double. It was a great production, with fast, witty dialogue; fun innuendos; great forties costumes; and gender-bending twists that definitely added to the plot tension…and there were sword fights! It was awesome…if you’re in Chicago, you should try to go see it!

In the spirit of the evening, I wore a tiered ruffle blue and white polka dot dress with a sweetheart-esque neckline, white bolero/shrug, red heels and earrings, and (of course) red lipstick!

Here you can actually tell the at the dress is blue!

Plus Size Fashion Tip: Tiered ruffles and layers are your friend! They camouflage any problem areas (like my dreaded stomach roll!) and help the clothes move with you instead of clinging in unflattering ways. Some ladies stay away from ruffles and such because they think it adds bulk or draws attention, but it does just the opposite! Next time you go shopping, look for the tiered ruffles or fabric and try it on…I think you’ll be surprised at the effect!

Purple and Red: An unexpected pairing with a punch

This is one of my favorite dresses! The bright royal purple is absolutely perfect! It originally came with a skinny black patent leather belt, but I wanted to spice it up a bit and try out the color-blocking trend which was all the rage in the fashion world this summer. I would never have paired purple and red together last year…but I love the way it looks! A red wrap belt and red heels…with turquoise jewelry and a lemon yellow purse (not shown) completed my look. What do you think?? Have you tried color-blocking this season?

Funky picture time! I was playing around with the color and exposure of this pic…

Vegas, Baby! Night #1

I just got back from a week in Vegas…and I’m exhausted!!! Most of the time was spent working…but I did get to go out and play at night! I loved loved loved Vegas and was glad for the chance to get GLAMOROUS! My first night out, I went to see the Cirque du Soleil show, KA. It was beautiful…like a dream…but also action-packed with a lot of aerial stunts and martial arts-themed movements.

Sometimes it’s hard to find sexy, going-out clothes for curvy girls, so I was thrilled when I found this maxi dress to wear to the theater with a bolero for some added warmth. Even with the horizontal stripes, I think it was flattering to my shape. The gathering at the bust-line helped the fabric move easily across my mid-section (the dreaded “roll”!). And, the low cut showed off my girls. lol.

Also…I love the colors in this dress! It makes me think of the desert…I paired it with gold hoops, an animal and stone print necklace, and a knuckle ring (that you can’t really see in the pic). I also went with a bold red lip-which was my theme for the trip. (Ignore my horrible hair…I’d been working all day and had under 20 minutes to get ready!)

Got my picture with one of the performers! HOTT.
At the end of a long night…so tired, but had so much fun!

Dress: Dots
“Instant Sleeves” from LucieLu
Necklace and ring: Dots
Earrings: Forever 21
Clutch: Chinese Laundry
Lipstick: Ruby Woo from Mac

Have you been to Vegas?? What did you wear when you went out on the town??

Outfit of the Day

The worst part about living alone is that I don’t have anyone to take my picture! 🙁 So…I know these pictures kind of suck, but it’s the best I can do at the moment. Oh, and ignore the weird date stamp, I took this picture on Wednesday, but the timer on my camera is way off.

So…here’s me at the end of a very long day. But, I love my dress so much, I had to share. The long peplum is on-trend right now, and the graphic stripes are also in line with some of the architectural details that I’ve seen in the fashion mags lately. The detail at the bodice is my favorite, and the way the stripes interact is very flattering. I hate that I don’t have a pic of the back-it has an exposed zipper! Anyway, let me know what you think. I’ll try to get my camera act together, I promise!

So anyway, I did end up going to the Akira Plus-Size Fashion Show last night…and it was actually pretty fun…if ultimately a gimmick. I’ll post pictures and give a full report soon!
